Introduction
Adopting a pet is always a unique experience, but adopting Gilbert, my bearded dragon, was a journey that I’ll never forget. My bearded dragon adoption story began on an ordinary day, but it quickly turned into an extraordinary adventure.
“In the end, it’s not about adopting the perfect pet. It’s about realizing that they’re perfect for you, just as they are.”
Meeting Gilbert
My quest for a bearded dragon led me to a local pet shop, a place filled with the chirping of birds, the rustling of small mammals, and the quiet, watchful eyes of reptiles. Among them, I first laid eyes on Gilbert.
Gilbert wasn’t like the other bearded dragons. He was smaller, his scales a bit duller, and he was missing a few fingers and toes. But despite his differences, there was something about him that caught my attention. Maybe it was the way he looked at me, with a kind of quiet curiosity, or maybe it was the way he moved, a little slower but with a determination that was hard to ignore.
As I watched him, I noticed that he didn’t interact much with the other bearded dragons. He seemed to prefer his own company, spending most of his time in a corner of the terrarium. But even in his solitude, there was a sense of resilience about him. He might have been smaller and weaker, but he was a survivor.
The more I watched Gilbert, the more I felt a connection with him. He wasn’t the typical bearded dragon, but that’s exactly what made him special. I could see that he wasn’t happy in the pet shop, and I knew then that I wanted to give him a better home. A place where he could be himself, where he could thrive despite his differences. And that’s when I decided to adopt Gilbert.

Learning About Gilbert’s Past
The pet shop owner shared Gilbert’s story with me, explaining how he had lost his fingers and toes in a fight with his siblings. It was a harsh reminder of the survival instincts that these creatures carry, even when they are far removed from their natural habitats.
Hearing about Gilbert’s past was a bit shocking. I had always imagined pet shops as safe spaces, but Gilbert’s story showed me that even in these environments, the laws of nature can still apply. It was a sobering realization, but it also made me admire Gilbert even more. Despite his early struggles, he had managed to survive and adapt.
The pet shop owner told me that because of his missing fingers and toes, Gilbert was often overlooked by potential adopters. They preferred the ‘perfect’ bearded dragons, the ones without any physical flaws. But to me, Gilbert’s differences didn’t make him less. If anything, they made him more special.
Knowing Gilbert’s past made me even more determined to give him a good home. I wanted to show him that despite his early experiences, the world could also be a kind and loving place. I wanted to give him a chance to live a life that wasn’t defined by survival, but by happiness and comfort. And so, with a heart full of determination and a head full of plans, I prepared to welcome Gilbert into my life.
“Gilbert’s story was a testament to the resilience of these creatures, a trait that I would come to admire greatly.”
Gilbert’s Transition to His New Home
Bringing Gilbert home was just the beginning of our journey together. The first few days were a whirlwind of setting up his terrarium, adjusting temperatures, and finding the right diet. But as we both adjusted to our new lives, I saw Gilbert begin to thrive.
At first, Gilbert was a bit shy. He would hide in his terrarium whenever I approached, peeking out with his curious eyes. But with patience and gentle handling, he slowly started to trust me. It was a joy to see him start to explore his new home, climbing on his basking rock, and digging in the substrate.
Feeding Gilbert was another adventure. Bearded dragons have a diverse diet, and I wanted to make sure Gilbert was getting all the nutrients he needed. I experimented with different vegetables and insects, watching Gilbert’s reactions to each new food. It was a fun process, and I learned a lot about bearded dragon nutrition along the way.
As the days turned into weeks, I saw Gilbert grow more comfortable in his new home. He started to show more of his personality, bobbing his head at his reflection and puffing out his beard when he was excited. It was amazing to see him transform from a shy, reserved creature into a confident, curious bearded dragon. And as I watched Gilbert thrive, I knew I had made the right decision in adopting him.
Observing Gilbert’s Resilience
Despite his past and his physical challenges, Gilbert showed an incredible amount of resilience and adaptability. He quickly learned to navigate his new environment, climbing with ease despite his missing fingers and toes. His appetite was hearty, and his curiosity was endless.
Gilbert’s resilience wasn’t just physical. He also showed a remarkable emotional strength. Despite his initial shyness, he gradually began to trust me, responding to my voice and even seeking out my company. It was as if he understood that he was now in a safe place, and he was ready to embrace his new life.
Adapting to a new environment can be stressful for any animal, but Gilbert took it all in stride. He was quick to learn the routines of his new home, and he seemed to enjoy the variety of foods and activities that were now part of his daily life. His missing fingers and toes didn’t slow him down at all. If anything, they seemed to make him even more determined to explore and engage with his surroundings.
Lessons Learned from Gilbert
Adopting Gilbert taught me valuable lessons about acceptance, resilience, and the unique bond between humans and their pets. I learned that every creature, no matter how small or seemingly different, has a story to tell and a life to live.
Top 3 Lessons from Gilbert
- Resilience: Despite his physical challenges, Gilbert never let anything hold him back. He’s a constant reminder that we can overcome any obstacle with determination and adaptability.
- Acceptance: Gilbert taught me the importance of accepting others, and ourselves, just as we are. His missing digits don’t make him any less of a bearded dragon, just as our own differences don’t diminish our worth.
- Bonding: Through Gilbert, I’ve experienced the unique bond between humans and their pets. He’s not just a bearded dragon; he’s a companion, a part of the family, and a source of endless joy and learning.
One of the most important lessons I learned from Gilbert was about acceptance. Gilbert, with his missing fingers and toes, was different from the other bearded dragons. But these differences didn’t make him any less deserving of love and care. In fact, they made him even more special. This experience taught me to embrace differences, not just in animals, but in people too.
Gilbert also taught me about resilience. Despite his physical challenges, he adapted to his new environment and thrived. He didn’t let his past define him. Instead, he embraced his new life with curiosity and enthusiasm. This showed me that it’s not our challenges that define us, but how we respond to them.
Finally, Gilbert taught me about the unique bond between humans and their pets. Despite being a different species, Gilbert and I formed a deep connection. He became more than just a pet; he became a part of my family. This experience showed me that love and connection can transcend species and physical differences. It’s a lesson I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life.
“Gilbert taught me that life isn’t about the challenges we face, but how we rise above them.”
Considering Bearded Dragon Adoption: What You Need to Know
If you’re also considering bearded dragon adoption just like I did with Gilbert, it’s important to understand the requirements to provide a suitable home for these unique creatures. Here’s what you need to know:
1. Enclosure Requirements: The minimum size for a bearded dragon enclosure should be a 40-gallon breeder or equivalent (36” x 18” footprint) for smaller dragons. Larger dragons may require a 75-gallon+ enclosure. The enclosure should have solid walls (no screen cages), adequate top or side ventilation, and three sides should be darkened or covered for the comfort of your bearded dragon.
2. Temperature and Lighting: Bearded dragons need a specific temperature and lighting setup to thrive. Primary basking heat should be provided from an overhead heat bulb, and a UV fluorescent strip light is necessary for artificial UV light. A day-night light cycle should also be maintained, with daytime bulbs on for approximately 12-14 hours during the day and off for approximately 10-12 hours at night.
3. Substrate: The substrate is the material that lines the bottom of your bearded dragon’s enclosure. It should be a solid substrate that is safe and easy to clean. Particle substrates like sand, dirt, or wood chips should not be used. Instead, consider tile, reptile carpet, or newspaper.
4. Enrichment Items: Decorative items such as basking surfaces, hiding places, fake plants, climbing branches/rocks, and hammocks are recommended for your bearded dragon’s enclosure. These items provide enrichment and mimic their natural habitat.
5. Food: Bearded dragons are omnivores and should be offered both plant and animal material. The food items should be an appropriate size, no larger than the space between the dragon’s eyes. Fresh greens, vegetables, and fruits should be provided, along with live insects such as cockroaches, crickets, superworms, butterworms, silkworms, or hornworms. Commercial pelleted or canned “complete” diets should not be used as a primary diet staple.
Adopting a bearded dragon is a rewarding experience, but it’s important to ensure you can meet their specific needs. By understanding these requirements, you can provide a loving and suitable home for your new scaly friend.
