The Veiled Virgin (2023)
“The Veiled Virgin” is a remarkable sculpture by Italian artist Giovanni Strazza.
The sculpture is a bust of the Virgin Mary, depicted with a serene and peaceful expression. What sets this sculpture apart and makes it truly extraordinary is the veil that appears to drape over Mary’s features. Despite being carved from solid marble, the veil is rendered with such skill and precision that it appears to be a sheer, translucent fabric.
The veil follows the contours of Mary’s face, clinging to her forehead, nose, and cheeks, and it’s possible to discern her facial features underneath. The veil even seems to rest lightly on her closed eyelids. The edges of the veil drape down, partially covering Mary’s hair, which is carved in soft, flowing lines.
The overall effect is one of ethereal beauty and delicate realism, a testament to Strazza’s masterful skill. The sculpture is often cited as an example of the “strangeness and beauty” of the veiled sculpture tradition, where hard stone is made to mimic soft, translucent fabric.
